[RL: Monday, 7pm || Café || Phoenix; Edgeworth]

Phoenix looked at his watch. 7:10. Edgeworth was late.

Suppressing a sigh, he took a sip of his coffee and wondered, not for the first time that evening, if he was doing the right thing; wondered if this would break what delicate progress they’d made on Christmas, or if he was blowing things way out of proportion. He had his doubts—Edgeworth had a way of misinterpreting his actions and it was likely this time wouldn’t be any different.

He yawned and scrubbed at his eyes. Clearly the coffee wasn’t doing its job.

If he were honest with himself, he’d know it had nothing to do with exhaustion and everything to do with stress; the lack of sleep was merely a symptom. In reality, the multitude of chaos was weighing down on him more than he was willing to admit. Between the upcoming trial, that ridiculous “virus,” and now Belle…

He wished more than anything that he had his laptop with him, just so he could log on to see if there had been any updates. Something told him there wouldn’t be, however, and it was that thought alone that kept him from dialing Edgeworth and calling the whole thing off. If Edgeworth even shows…

…And then, of course, there was her… Phoenix cradled his coffee and tried, in vain, not to think about it. If it weren’t for her, he wouldn’t be in the position he was in now. But he knew he wasn’t being fair. Edgeworth deserved the truth, after all. He deserved it long before now.

Phoenix checked his watch again. 7:15.

He sighed into his coffee.
