[RL: - Musical Virus | Phoenix; Angie]

It had been a long night.

By the time Angie finally arrived the next day, the sun was already high in the sky. Phoenix sat at his typewriter, a meager attempt to get some work done, while Angie quietly sat on the bed. She had, of course, offered a simple explanation for her absence, but the thought that the Duke might have had something to do with it kept gnawing at the back of Phoenix’s mind. With each passing second, his unfounded jealousy grew more intense.

Hesitating no longer, he finally turned to her and asked, “Where were you last night?”

Angie hugged herself and glanced up at Phoenix, giving him a weak smile. "I told you, I was sick,"

Oh but I do, Angie thought to herself, and she turned away from Phoenix and spoke in a frantic and loud whisper. "We have to end it. Everyone knows. Harold knows. Sooner or later the Duke will find out too."

She paused for a moment, her own words hurting her as much as shew knew they were hurting Phoenix. "On opening night, I have to sleep with the Duke. And the jealousy will drive you mad."

She stood up hastily and walked briskly to the door before he could say anything.

Angie sucked in a deep breath and closed her eyes. "Phoenix..." she said softly, silently pleading back for him not to try.

Angie sighed heavily, yet sadly. "Things don’t work that way, Phoenix. We have to end it..." she sidestepped the young man and walked out onto the balcony, trying her best not to break down like she so desperately wanted to.

This was for the best... it really was! At least, that's what she kept telling herself... she wasn't sure if she believed it any more.
